Safety Advice

To avoid problems.-

Manhattan is a safe place, however the element of caution is advisable, not displaying or flaunting wealth in public places. Avoid taking your wallet or purse or objects of value out in crowded areas or in the presence of strangers. It is always a good idea to have coins or small notes in a different pocket to the one where you carry your wallet. During the day, all of Manhattan is a safe place, from the southern tip to 110th street, to the north of Central Park. At night it continues to be a safe place up to 42nd street and even the up to 80th street, so long as you stay between the 5th and 8th Avenue. At night time try to avoid the dock areas (the 1st, 11th and 12th Avenue) that are normally crowded and not as well lit.

To solve any problems you have.-

Write down and keep in a safe place the address and number of your Consulate in New York. The British Consul is here.

The telephone number of the customer service line for VISA for calls made from the USA is (800) 847 2911 and the number for AMERICAN EXPRESS (800) 892333.
