Passaports and visas.-

European passengers must have a passport that is valid for at least six months from the date of entry in the United States. The passport must be stamped on entering the country. If you need more information consult the Ministry of Foreign Affairs web site of your country of origin.

Cash and credit cards.-

Normally, in New York you will be paying in cash or with your usual credit cards. Before you leave buy dollars in your bank or building society. If you are taking less than ten thousand dollars (10.000 $) you will not have to declare anything in Customs on entering the United States. ( currently valid legislation corresponding to 31st December 2007).

Don’t forget your credit cards: two are better than one, leave one in the safety deposit box in your hotel and make sure you have credit on in case you lose the other one. It is also a good idea to write down the telephone number on the reverse of the card to ring in case you lose the card or have it stolen. VISA or AMERICAN EXPRESS is accepted almost everywhere.

Show your passport when paying with a credit card. It is an operation that doesn’t normally have commission. However commissions are charged for withdrawing money from a cash point when abroad. Check this with your bank or building society before leaving. Also ask if they have offices in Manhattan or if not if they have any agreements with local banks. You never know when you may need them.
